Snooker Nationals for Sumathipala Trophy Sri Lanka Billiards and Snooker Association will conduct the National Snooker Championship 2003, for the U. W. Sumathipala Challenge Trophy, towards selecting players for the Asian Championship scheduled to be held in April 2003 at calcutta, India. District Championship Entries have been called to play the preliminary Lanka Plate District championship in Colombo, Galle, Nuwara Eliya and Kandy Districts. The last 32 players in District will qualify to play in the all Island Lanka Plate Championship. The last eight players of the all Island Lanka Plate will qualify for the National Round Robin Matches consisting of eight Groups of which the Last 16 players will qualify for the National Knockout Championship to select the No. 1 and 2 players for the forthcoming Asian Snooker championship in Calcutta, India in April 2003. The family of U. W. Sumathipala and hardened lovers of the game have for the past few years provided sponsorship package for the whole championship with prize monies and trophies exceeding Rs. 100,000. Jagath Sumathipala, former president and vice Patron of the Billiards and Snooker association of Sri Lanka has done yeoman service for the cue sport in Sri Lanka. The Snooker playing fraternity in Sri Lanka greatly appreciaies this magnanimous gesture and expects to witness very high standard of Snooker in the ensuing weeks. The Tournament draw is scheduled to be held on the 25th January at 2.00 p.m. in the Race Course headquarters. |
