Eliyakanda Hill Climb on February 2

The Southern Motor Sports Club (SMSC) is organising for the sixth successive year, the Eliyakanda Hill Climb to be held on Sunday the 2nd of February, 2003 at Browns Hill, Matara. As a mark of respect to the yeoman service rendered by late Preethi Palliyaguru, a former President and a pioneer member of the Southern Motor Sports Club, this event has been named as Preethi Palliyaguru Memorial Southern Eliyakanda Hill Climb by the organisers since last year.

The Southern Eliyakanda Hill Climb starts from the main gate of the Residency of the District Secretary at Browns Hill, Matara and terminates at the latter premises. The Hill Climb gives a panoramic view of the beautiful coastal strip of Matara. The duration of the meet will be approximately 7 hours (from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.). There will be about 19 events covering both motorcycles and motor cars. The previous meet was participated by about 75 motor sports men and women, including the well-known drivers and riders in the country.

Prize giving will take place at Pearl Cliff Hotel, close to the course of the race, at 4 p.m. This motor sports event has been acknowledged by the competitors as one of the best-organised and most challenging Hill Climbs of Sri Lanka.

The excitement the hill climb offers, with its sharp and challenging bends and climbs is something that the competitor will remember for many years to come. Increasingly large numbers of spectators too are attending this event, adding to it, colour and glamour.

The Southern Motor Sports Club, which organises this event, is well-known for its organisational and technical skills in organising motor sports events in the country and the Southern Rally 2001 (nicknamed as a journey through the wilderness of the south) organised by this club is considered by many competitors as the best motor sports event ever held in Sri Lanka, in respect of organisation, professionalism, and entertainment. Entries for the Southern Eliyakanda Hill Climb 2003 are now open and entry forms can be obtained from the following addresses.
