Prof.Colvin Goonaratna, new SLAAS President

Prof. Colvin Goonaratna will take over the presidency of SLAAS - (Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science).

The outgoing president Dr. Sudarshani Wasalathanthri will induct the new president in office on Thursday at the SLAAS auditorium at Vidya Mawatha, Colombo 7.

Mr. Goonaratna, who has just retired from the Colombo Medical Faculty has served for several years as its Professor in Physiology. He has also been the Chairman of the Ruhunu Clinical Society, and also been the President of the SLMA. He is also the Editor of the Ceylon Medical Journal.

Prof. Goonaratne is credited with initiating the worlds first centenarian study in Sri Lnaka in association with the Daily News Medical page Health Watch in 2001 for the twin objectives of finding out any possible secrets of long life and socially creating in society respect for human life.

In the course of this programme the study team has identified Sri Lanka's oldest living centenarian, 114 year old O.T. Engonona, who is now confirmed as the worlds second oldest living centenarian, and is also the healthiest in the world.
