The Mahabodhi Society of Sri Lanka has made elaborate arrangements to celebrate Sri Lanka's 55th Independence Day at the Mahabodhi Viharaya in Chennai, India on a grand scale on February 4 this year. The celebrations held with the assistance of the public in Chennai including Sri Lankan nationals resident in the area will include religious observances, cultural items and a musical show featuring several leading Sri Lankan artistes. The anusasana at the religious observances will be delivered by Ven. Maduluwawe Sobhita Thera, Viharadhipati, Naga Viharaya, Kotte. Special lectures will also be delivered by Prof. Suriyanarayan of the Chennai (Madras) University and Dr. (Mrs) Lorna Devaraja of the Colombo University. Sangeeth Nipun Sanath Nandasiri and Malkanthie Nandasiri will be among the artistes featured at the musical show. Visharada Ajith Darshana Jayaweera and Visharda Manoj Pieris will provide the music while students of the Chennai Kala Peetaya will add colour to the cultural festival with several dance items. Ven. Maduluwawe Sobhita Thera addressing a press conference held in this connection at the Agra Sravaka Maha Viharaya, Maligakanda said events of this nature will enable Sinhala and Tamil Communities to mingle and interact with each other and help realise the goal of lasting peace in our country soon. A large number of Sinhalese living in Chennai as well as Sri Lankan Tamil refugees in Chennai and other regions in Tamil Nadu are expected to participate in this event. It will also help to further strengthen the cordial relations existing between Sri Lanka and India for centuries, he added. He said Independence celebrations in Chennai this year will be sponsored by the National Savings Bank and the Samurdhi Social Development Trust Fund. |
