Computer literacy to be promoted in rural schools Shakthi Computers (Pvt) Ltd, a computer training institute in Ratnapura which has the 'country licence' from 'Fourth R' - a global IT company has signed an agreement with the Ministry of Education of the Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council to promote computer education in rural schools. "We have already started computer centres in 10 schools in the Province," Assistant Manager, Anura Banda said. Our aim is to enhance the computer literacy rate among children in rural schools and obtain 100% rate in 2006," he said. The project initially focuses on three major areas: introducing the Fourth R international curriculum with an international standard testing and certification facilities, technology transfer program including teacher training and management training for local youth and developing suitable financial models to execute the project. The language barrier and the familiarity with computers were taken as the main obstacles in introducing the Fourth R international curriculum to the students. Due to the need of pre preparation of rural students Fourth R has developed an orientation program to link the skill level with the international curriculum which covers almost all the technology areas in IT such as information science, Desktop Publishing, Word Processing, Spread Sheet, Database Management and Programming, Banda said. With the success of the pilot project the Fourth R has already taken the concept to other provinces and 1,600 students of Richmond College, Galle and 1,050 students of St.Anthony's College Katugastota have joined the international IT training program of Fourth R last year. |
