Maher gets the thumbs up from Gilchrist ADELAIDE, Australia, Thursday (AFP) - Australian stand-in wicketkeeper Jimmy Maher earned the seal of approval here Thursday from the country's regular gloveman Adam Gilchrist. Maher, 28, stood behind the stumps for an extended period for Australia for the first time Wednesday in a tri-nations series one-day clash against Sri Lanka at the Gabba Ground in Brisbane. Over a span of 50 overs he conceded only four byes, pouched a catch - and won enthusiastic praise from Gilchrist, watching from the sidelines after seeking a rest from a hectic international schedule. "It was a terrific thrill for me to see Jimmy performing so well with the gloves," Gilchrist said when he arrived here to prepare for Sunday's tri-nations game against England. "He is such a great team man and a versatile character. "To step in like that was wonderful. He must have been nervous, especially in front of a packed house on his home ground. |
