Lalith elected President of KDCA

by Our Kandy Sports correspondent

Lalith Rambukwella was unanimously elected as the President of the Kegalle District Cricket Association for the fourth year in succession at the Annual General Meeting held in Kegalle, Hotel Rilizla.

M. J. B. Nawaz was also elected as the Honorary Secretary unanimously for the fourth year in running. Lalith Rambukwella speaking on the occasion thanked the member clubs for re-electing him for the fourth year and the confidence placed on him to carry on the activities of the Kegalle District CA for another year.

Lalith Rambukwella said that the annual tournaments have been conducted with success and cricket materials have been distributed to needy clubs and schools for the promotion and development of cricket in the past. In addition coaching expertise has also been provided to cricketers to improve their skills.

Lalith Rambukwella further said that unavailability of adequate playground facilities in Kegalle has been a major constraint to further develop the game in the district. Kegalle has just one playground for all sports - such as cricket, soccer, athletics, rugby for both schools and clubs. The demand for this playground which is the Kegalle Public grounds could be imagined. Even this ground requires repairs as there are barren patches where a sportsman is at risk in injuring himself. The demand for this ground is such that Club cricket is usually played during weekends and schools are compelled to play their matches on week days. January and February being the months for sports meets and practices, this ground is fully occupied.

Lalith Rambukwella said in order to overcome this problem, the Kegalle, District CA is exploring the possibility of expanding the present playgrounds at Galigamuwa Maha Vidyalaya and this requires the acquisition of small plots of lands in the surrounding area. This work is now in progress and once the acquisition work is completed, then they could start work in the grounds which will give Kegalle another ground for cricket and maybe other sports too and this will ease the demand on the Kegalle Public grounds and this will also allow breathing space for repairs and other maintenance work. He was confident that this will be a reality in the future.

Lalith Rambukwella in conclusion said that the Interim Committee had carried on for too long and it is time and that he was hopeful that the elections for the Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka will be held in the near future for the benefit of the game itself. The following were elected officials for the year 2003/04. President: Lalith Rambukwella.
