It is high time that we have to get away from these conventional practices, said the Minister of Central Region Development Tissa Attanayake addressing a meeting of the Tea Smallholders at Kadugannawa Central College. Minister Attanayake also said under globalization there is not a ready market for anyone. But one has to fight for one's place through competitiveness. One has to run and get one's place. Speaking about the improvements that are planned to be implemented the Minister said the factory at Yatinuwara that had been closed will be opened and Pansaltenna Tea Factory and Matale West Tea Factory will get a facelift, for the benefit of the Smallholders. The Minister said that some urge that the price of tea should be increased by Rs. 2. He said it would be more meaningful if we could get a higher yield by introducing new technology. He urged the TRI to make more efforts to achieve such progress. The Minister also said India has come to the scene of our tea industry with a loan of Rs. 6,000 million. This will be used to modernize our techniques. "Public enterprises that eat up public funds will be closed and no state money will be pumped into them, said Minister Attanayake. He also mentioned that some ventures that had run at a loss have succeeded and this would serve as an example for others too said the Minister. Provincial Manager Central Province S. M. Ariyaratne and Chairman P. S. Champika Nilantha also spoke. |
