Attempt to kill Viharadhipathi : CID arrests assailant by Sarath Malalasekera The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) probing the attempt to kill Awkana Raja Maha Viharadhipathi by throwing a hand bomb while he was bathing in the Kala Oya on September 6, 2002 arrested the assailant in Anuradhapura Police area yesterday. Investigations revealed that another bhikku living in the temple had given the contract to kill the Viharadhipathi. A special CID team led by a Superintendent of Police is looking for the bhikkhu alleged to have given the contract to kill the Viharadhipathi. Investigations revealed that the late Chief Incumbent of the Awkana Raja Maha Viharaya had deposited several lakhs of rupees in a savings bank. The temple's daily collection was about Rs. 8,000. The CID believe that a young bhikkhu had given the contract to kill the Viharadhipathi to get the money deposited in the savings bank. |
