Five Committees to strengthen parliamentary system

The Government has decided to strengthen the country's parliamentary system by setting up five Parliamentary Committees comprising members of all political parties represented in the House.

Cabinet Spokesman Prof G.L Peiris said yesterday that they were preparing a detailed plan to promote a different political culture based on all party cooperation in Parliament on the directives of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.

"These major Committees aimed at getting rid of the confrontational atmosphere prevalent in the House will comprise government and opposition members of Parliament. This will give them the opportunity to get together and work for the development of the country," he said adding that the idea was brought up during the Prime Minister's recent visit to Japan.

The five committees to be set up will deal with matters pertaining to good governance, ethnic harmony and national integration, the peace process, economic issues with regard to the government's initiative of 'Regaining Sri Lanka' and the problem of the aging population of the country.
