Indian police imposes curfew in central Indian town after riots Police imposed a curfew Tuesday following communal violence in a town in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh in which several shops were burnt down, local media reported. The Press Trust of India (PTI) said the tension in Ganjbasoda, on the outskirts of the state capital Bhopal, was sparked by the discovery of the severed head of a cow, an animal considered sacred by the majority Hindu community. It said activists from religious organizations then marched through the streets, threw stones and set fire to property, including shops. Police responded with teargas shells and by firing several rounds of live ammunition in the air. The police also arrested a Muslim man, Salim, in whose house the cow's head was found, PTI reported. Police rushed in reinformcements to the town, although the situation was under control, PTI added. |
