South Asian environmental confab on January 20

by Florence Wickramage

A two-day meeting of the Governing Council of South Asia Cooperative Environment Programme (SACEP) will be held in Colombo on January 20 chaired by Environment and Natural Resources Minister Rukman Senanayake.

The meeting will finalise an Asian Sub Regional Level work programme to follow up recommendations of the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) held in Johannesburg last year.

The focus will be on a framework for action on water, sanitation, energy, health, agriculture and biodiversity. Foreign Affairs Minister Tyronne Fernando will inaugurate the meeting on January 21.

The WSSD Plan of Implementation recognises the importance of regional, sub-regional and trans-regional action to promote sustainable development and calls for support for the development, enhancing and implementation of agreed regional development strategies.

The SACEP works with other regional and sub-regional entities on their future actions. The meeting will primarily focus on the cooperation between SAARC and SACEP on Environmental issues. On the agenda for discussion are the Memorandum of Understanding for cooperation on the response to marine oil spills, South Asian Environmental Education and Training Action Plan and the status of the implementation of the Male Declaration on control and prevention of air pollution and its likely transboundary effects for South Asia.

The International Coral Reef Action Network (ICRAN) has recently established a partnership with SACEP to promote Coral Reef Conservation within the region and for further development.

Environment ministers of Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, a high-level delegation from India and observers from UN agencies and donor organisations will attend the two-day event.
