Housemaids death: Ministry contacts SL Envoy

The Manager Foreign Relations of the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment has responded to the request of Y.G. Wijetileke, of No. 66 B, Palapathwela, Wahacotte, about the sudden death of his wife Mrs. K.G. Malanee Jayaweera on the day she reported for duty as a housemaid at the household of Sheickha Salen Sulthan of Al-Dosary, Dhamman in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The manager SLBOFE has informed the husband of the deceased in a letter dated 27.12.2002 that the Bureau had inquired from the Sri Lankan Embassy in that country about this matter. The embassy has spoken to the employer as well as the Employment Agency that arranged the assignment for the woman concerned. It has also mentioned that the despatch of the remains of Malanee Jayaweera would be made bearing the cost by the employment agency.

Media Secretary to the Ministry Assisting Foreign Affairs has sent the following Fax message to the Ambassador, Sri Lanka Embassy, KSA, under the reference number MAF/MB/9II and dated January 2, 2003. "It is reported that Ms. Kohilawatte Gedara Malanee Jayaweera had left the Island on the 28.10.2002 for employment as a housemaid in the undermentioned address. The agent in Sri Lanka has informed Mr. Y.G. Wijethilake that his wife had died in her new work place, Mr. Y.G. Wijethilake, husband of said Sri Lankan has made several complaints to the authorities in Sri Lanka but it was fruitless. Therefore he had sought the assistance of the Minister Assisting Foreign Affairs to get down the remains of Ms. Malanee to Sri Lanka as early as possible.

This Ministry has noted from the medical certificate issued by the Saudi authorities which states that the cause of death was due to internal bleeding.

As instructed by the Minister, I shall appreciate if action is taken to despatch the remains of Ms. Malanee as early as possible and also verify the circumstances and cause of the internal bleeding".
