Six persons including five schoolchildren were killed when a hand grenade exploded at a school play ground at Katiyawa, Eppawela yesterday afternoon.

The incident took place around 2 p.m., police said. One boy died on the spot while others succumbed to their injuries while being taken to hospital.

Amongst the victims were two boys from the same family.
