by Ananda Kannangara A record 97 per cent of youth seeking jobs in foreign countries obtain the official authority granted by the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) when leaving the country, the year end Bureau survey revealed. The survey also indicated that unlike previous occasions only a very few Lankans are now slipping out of the country for jobs avoiding the special counter, established by the Bureau at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA), Katunayake. The special counter established several years ago has been empowered to examine passports, the official Bureau registration and the validity of job related documents of migrant workers. "The implementation of numerous welfare facilities like life insurance policies for migrant workers and bank loans to construct houses and start self employment projects for their family members are the main reasons for seeking the Bureau approval by workers", Chairman, SLBFE Susantha Fernando said. He said the Bureau has also made arrangements to hold on the spot inquiries into the employment problems and working conditions of Lankan workers in most of the countries. The services of Sri Lankan labour officers have been extended to fulfil this task. "Safe houses, established in several countries for workers leaving jobs for various reasons are funded by the Bureau", he said. |
