Muttiah Muralitharan had no problems with umpire Darrel Hair bowling before the man who first called him for chucking in the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne in the 1995/1996 series. .

Muralitharan came on to bowl from the end in which Hair was standing and got through his first three overs without any hindrance although he went wicket less.

It was apparent that Hair was not interested in watching the bowler's arm any more. Instead Hair was more interested in watching whether the bowler was over stepping and studying the enormous turn that the bowler was extracting in case he was called to adjudicate on leg befores. Muralitharan also did not no ball.

Had Hair called him for this offence, there would have been somewhat of a flutter and excitement wondering whether the umpire called him for chucking. But umpires cannot anymore call bowlers with suspect actions. They have been asked to make reports to the match referee who in turn will forward it to the International Cricket Council.

Later Muralitharan continued to bowl from the opposite end where Zimbabwean umpire Russel Tiffin was standing and again got through his overs unhindered. In bowling his 10 overs for 36 he bowled England tailender Jimmy Anderson that gave him a record 300 wickets in one-day internationals.
