Ten member gang rounded up, firearms seized

by Sarath Malalasekera

Grandpass police have rounded up a ten member robber gang together with firearms and ammunition from their possession. They were arrested while on their way for a series of robberies in the city by a team headed by Grandpass OIC Inspector G. S. Jayasinghe.

Timely intervention by the Grandpass Police has succeeded in averting a spate of robberies and mayhem the criminals were planning to unleash in several parts of the country.

The Grandpass Police have recovered ten hand grenades, several firearms, three locally made galkatas, a toy pistol, a hand phone, and two swords.

Questioned at length about the hand phone recovered from one of the suspects in custody, he had told the police that it was sent to him by his sister in Kuwait. "We will send this hand phone to the Police Communication Centre at Mirihana to ascertain the type of this telephone", OIC Jayasinghe said.

The police team also recovered a motorcycle and several electrical items robbed from a school in Dummalasuriya. The gang had robbed the electrical items from the Dummalasuriya school in order to sell them and purchase firearms for their criminal activities.

Investigations revealed that the young gang used to undertake contract killings in any part of the country. The special police team consisted of Chief Inspector D.S. Jayasinghe, RSI Ajith Peduruarachchi, Sergeants Herath, Balakrishnarajah, constables Priyantha, Manjula, Kumara, Herath, Seneviratne, RPCs Maithripala and Herath.
