The International Buddhist Conference 2003, bringing together Theravada Buddhist Countries organised by the Buddha Sasana Ministry will be held at the Hotel Galadari, Colombo from January 16 to 19. The inaugural ceremony of the conference will be held at the Central Bank auditorium, Rajagiriya on January 16 at 9.am under the patronage of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and Buddha Sasana Minister W.J.M. Lokubandara. The conference will review and assess the current situation of the Buddhasasana in Theravada countries including the problems, challenges faced by it as well as its strengths. The conference will also focus attention to formulate an appropriate national level action, particularly international collaborative action for forging a Way Forward for Buddhasasana, a press release issued by the Buddha Sasana Ministry said. Cambodia, Laos, India, Myanmar, Thailand, Sri Lanka and Bhutan will attend the conference as the core Theravada countries while Bangladesh, and People's Republic of China, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Mongolia, Nepal, Singapore and Vietnam will participate as Observers. Twelve issues arising from the four primary objectives prepared by each Theravada country will be presented at the conference. Seven selected topics of common interest for Asian Buddhists, which could serve as the `Corner Stones' for building up mutual understanding and cooperative action will also be implemented. The release said the conference is not an one-off event, but one that envisions post-conference missions. It comprises a two-tier scheme for international collaborative action on Buddhasasana. In addition, the conference will also make low-cost and cost-effective institutional arrangements for multilateral cooperation with the help of Observer-Status countries. |
