Hindus all over the world celebrate Thai Pongal ushering in prosperity, happiness and good fortune. According to the Hindu tradition, the day of Thai Pongal marks the beginning of a new season. The Thai Pongal has an additional significance of being a festival of harvest as the first reap of harvest is offered to the Gods. In a society with an agricultural base, the cow is treated sacred and the Thai Pongal signifies the peaceful co-existence among man, animal and the environment. The Hindus have been celebrating this festival from ancient times. After a long spell of about 20 years, the Thai Pongal is celebrated for the second successive year with a new hope, high expectation and with conviction that human welfare and dignity is ensured in an atmosphere of peace. Our Government is now engaged in a genuine effort to bring back peace and normalcy to the Island. The results so far achieved, are very encouraging and there is every hope that we can achieve peace with the co-operation of all. On this noble day, let us resolve to work together to establish goodwill, brotherhood and mutual understanding among all so that we will be victorious in achieving the objective of a peaceful and prosperous Sri Lanka. I offer my heartiest congratulations and best wishes to the Sri Lankan Hindus both here and abroad and wish them a Happy Thai Pongal. |
