Four militants, four civilians killed in Indian Kashmir SRINAGAR, India, Jan 8 (AFP) - Four Islamic militants and four civilians were killed in Indian-administered Kashmir overnight, a police spokesman said. Two militants, both Pakistani nationals, were killed by the security forces in the southern district of Udhampur late Tuesday during an encounter in open fields, he said. A Muslim civilian who strayed into the crossfire was also killed. Security forces recovered two AK rifles from the site of the encounter. Indian security forces shot dead another militant early Wednesday in the central district of Budgam, police said. The fourth militant died in a fierce encounter with troops in the northern district of Kupwara. Late Tuesday police recovered the bodies of three men, two of whom had been beheaded, in the southern district of Anantnag. The killings sparked panic in the area. The counter-insurgency police also recovered 40 kilograms (88 pounds) of deadly RDX explosive from a passenger bus in the summer capital Srinagar on Tuesday. More than 37,500 people have died in Indian Kashmir since 1989 when militants launched an anti-India rebellion to secede the region from India and join it with neighbouring Pakistan or remain independent. |
