by Asanga Warnakulasuriya The new two-storeyed building of the Bandaranaike Centre for International Studies (BCIS) was declared open by President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga at the BMICH yesterday. The opening of the new building was in concurrence with the 104th birth anniversary of the late S.W.R.D.Bandaranaike. A multi religious ceremony was held in presence of President, Chinese Ambassador, Jiang Qinzheng, Lakshman Kadirgamar and members of the Bandaranaike family. Donated by the Government of the People's Republic of China, the new BCIS building was constructed by the China Human International Economic and Technical Co-operation costing of approximately Rs. 100 million. The new building houses six lecture halls, computer centre, library, documentation centre and a 200 seat auditorium. Established in 1974, the BCIS is known as an autonomous, non profit organisation specialising in international relations including training, research, and advance studies. The BCIS, directed by the Council of Management is headed by Lakshman Kadirgamar. Among the subjects covered by the BCIS are International Law and Human Rights, Conflict Resolution and Peace Studies and Internal War and Terrorism. Under the new curriculum, three courses namely, Certificate, Diploma and Higher/Post Graduate Diploma will be introduced instead of the traditional Diploma and Post Graduate Diploma. The BCIS will offer individual research activities for postgraduate students while the projects commissioned by the Foreign Ministry and other international institutions will also be carried out by BCIS.
