Souvenir post for Thurusevana Economic Centre unveiled

by Delgoda Group Correspondent

Minister of Rural Industries and Deputy Minister of Finance Bandula Gunawardane promised that Sri Lanka will be converted to the Asian country that has the fastest economic growth speed within next 300 days.

The Minister said so on the occasion organised to unveil the souvenir post for the proposed "Thurusewana Economic Centre" which will be built by the 'New Kandy Road' in the vicinity of Rajasinghe Bridge in the Kelani river dale of Biyagama.

The Minister emphasized that Sri Lanka will gain Asia's fastest economic growth depending on three facts. A permanent peace no Gulf war, nor any political sabotage by any mischievous parties within next 300 days. "The country was suffering from economic paralysis in 2001. The economic growth rate dropped to minus 4.1. In 2002 we could steer it to a positive value up to 3. We have stabilized the value of the Rupee. That is a great victory for the financial field" the Minister added.

"During last year, tea, rubber and paddy production increased. Electricity and Telephone utilities were promoted. Thus we changed that paralysed economy. In the future we can create employment and increase the wages. The Thurusewana Economic Centre will be built by the bank of Kelani River, as an environmental friendly project that would promote the area's agricultural crops and clay industry. Ornamental handycrafts will have good prices. The Gampaha District is well-known to be green in vegetation. Gamapaha is famous for pineapple and vegetables. Within the next 60 days the Thurusewana Economic Centre will be set up as a project that paves the way for business of rural folk" the Minister said.

Minister of School Development Suranimala Rajapakse said "I have plod along the muddy path, that was then, to reach here together with the Prime Minister to see the place proposed for the bridge. It was the time when people crossed the river by canoes. The place has now become a gateway between the Colombo and Gampaha Districts. Everybody in the region can be proud of this development. The motorways, industries and business atmosphere were built up due to the strong foundation laid by the establishing of the Biyagama Free Trade Zone. We must be grateful to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and the Government".

We launch this project in the Biyagama electorate, as the first development step in 2003. In the next week the removal of unauthorized and inconsistent buildings at Bandarawatta Junction will commence. The Town will be developed in a systematic way. We will develop Biyagama without politics", the Minister added.

Prasanna Sampath, Chairman of the Biyagama Pradeshiya Sabha also addressed the gathering.
