by Matara Central correspondent Wehera Hena Temple in the Matara district became world famous due to the untiring efforts of Venerable Davlagala Sangarathana Nayaka Thera of Kotte chapter of Siyan Maha Nikaya. He served as a beacon to the entire Sangha community. The Nayake Thera was a unique figure, said the Minister of Human Resources Development, Education and Cultural Affairs Dr. Karunasena Kodituwakku, when he delivered an oration at the state funeral accorded to the late incumbent of Matara Vehera Hena Temple on January 2nd 2003 at the Uyanwatta Esplanade, Matara. A large gathering was present. Minister Kodituwakku said, the demise of the Nayaka Thera is an irreparable loss to the nation. I appeal to the pupils of the late Thera to continue the good work rendered by their teacher. Venerable Rajakeeya Panditha Bellane Gnanawimala Nayaka Thera said, there is much to be emulated from the character of late Davlagala Sangarathana Thera. The greatest respect one can pay him is to follow his exemplary way of living. A message of condolence from President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga was read out by the Chief Minister Southern Province H. G. Sirisena. While the message of condolence of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe was read out by Southern Region Development Minister Ananda Kularatne. Chancellor of the Kelaniya University Venerable Welamitiyawe Kusaladhamma Nayake Thera expressed his sorrow on behalf of the entire bhikkhu community over the demise of Sangarathana Thera. He also said that the late Nayaka Thera's pupils numbering over 17 must be taken care of by all Buddhists of the district. Chief Sanghanayake of Colombo, Nawakorale Venerable Diviyagaha Yasassi Thera said, Bhikkhus from all over the island are present at the funeral of the late Nayaka Thera. President of the Funeral Committee Matara District MP Lakshman Yapa Abeywardana said, Vehera Hena is a temple providing strength to others in the district of Matara. The late Thera has brought up pupils of fame worldwide. Buddhists from countries like Singapore, Japan and other Buddhist countries are present here to pay their last respects to the late Nayaka Thera. Chancellor of the University of Ruhuna Venerable Attudawe Rahula Thera and several other Nayaka Theras delivered anusasanas. Matara District MP Justin Galappaththi also spoke. |
