Sixty-nine selected welfare centres in the Puttalam District are being rehabilitated, following remedial action taken by Minister of Vanni Rehabilitation Noordeen Mashoor. Two thousand families displaced from the Northern Province are housed in these 69 welfare centres in the Puttalam, Kalpitiya and Mundal Divisional Secretariats. Each family is given a payment of Rs. 2,000 to reconstruct and rehabilitate their temporary dwelling places. The total cost is four million rupees, states in a press release issued by Minister Assisting Vanni Rehabilitation Noordeen Mashoor, MP. Minister Mashoor participated at a function on Saturday, January 4, at the Kalpitiya Divisional Secretariat where he handed-over these payments (of Rs. 2,000 each) to some selected Sinhalese fisher families from Vanathavillu Pookkulam Village. Mr. Mashoor paid a tribute to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe for releasing this sum of money (Rs. 4 million) from the Treasury at his request. He pointed out that the Premier's gesture of releasing this sum of money at a time of financial crisis in the government was to be recognised immensely by all of us. He spoke about the Premier's bold determination and action towards restoring peace by negotiating with the LTTE, requested all section of the masses, shedding their differences to extend a helping hand and to pray for his noble task in order to build a united and prosperous Sri Lanka. The Minister also inspected the houses of the refugees, destroyed by the recent fire in the Kalpitiya - Kurinchipity and Karambai villages and granted compensation to ten affected families. |
