Achim Steiner, Director General of the IUCN - The World Conservation Union visited Sri Lanka recently. Steiner was in Sri Lanka to attend meetings of the IUCN Asia region. He was also informed of the progress made in the IUCN Sri Lanka programme and held meetings with IUCN's members and partners in the country, states a IUCN press release. During his visit, the Director General had the opportunity to meet Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, at the Prime Minister's Office at the Parliamentary Complex in Sri Jayawardenapura. At this meeting Steiner discussed matters pertaining to environmental conservation and management in the country and IUCN's past and present contributions in the conservation arena as well as future interventions especially in view of the on-going peace process. Steiner also met the Minister of Environment and Natural Resources, Rukman Senanayake and the Minister of Finance K. N. Choksy during his visit. William B. Jackson, Head IUCN Global Programme, Miguel Araujo, Head, Corporate Strategies, Ms. Aban Marker Kabraji, Regional Director, Asia and Ms. Shiranee Yasaratne, Country Representative of IUCN Sri Lanka were also present at these discussions. A reception was held in honour of the Director General, by IUCN Sri Lanka at the Galle Face Hotel which was attended by IUCN members, partners, key donors and staff from the regional and country offices. |
