by Sarath Malalasekera

Freelance Journalist Nuwan Nirodha yesterday told the CID which is probing the news item regarding an attempt to assassinate the President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga which appeared in the 'Lakmina' weekend Sinhala newspaper that he wrote the story on the direction of Ranjith Silva. After writing the story he handed over same to Ranjith Silva, he told the CID.

Nirodha told the CID that he had never heard of a person by the name of Chmapika working with them at the newspaper.

The investigators yesterday said they had obtained documentary evidence to prove that Tecla Dilrukshi Perera had been the publisher of the 'Lakmina' newspaper until December 20, 2002.

She will appear before the CID today, January 9, 2003 on a directive by the Colombo Fort Magistrate and Additional District Judge Mohammed Macay.

The CID investigations also revealed that the first Editor of the Lakmina newspaper had been a journalist attached to a national newspaper. The investigators will also notice the former Editor of the Lakmina to appear before the CID to record a statement.

A statement from the Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa was recorded earlier.
