by D. Oliver Silva, Shiromi Dahanayake and L. S. Egodawita The renovation work on the golden canopy shading the repository of the Sacred Tooth Relic in the Sri Dalada Maligawa, Kandy has been completed and will be opened for public view on January 25, states Diyawadana Nilame Neranjan Wijeyaratne. The Diyawadana Nilame made this disclosure at a special discussion held at the Maligawa on January 7. The golden canopy originally constructed on the initiative of late President Ranasinghe Premadasa was in a state needing repairs. Pursuant to a request made by the Mahanayaka Theras of the Asgiriya and Malwatta Chapters and by the Diyawadana Nilame Neranjan Wijeyaratne, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe took steps to renovate it and cover it with an imported golden shield. The imported pure golden shield is incalculable in value and will protect the golden canopy from the sun and rain for many more years to come, without needing any repairs, stated an Officer attached to the State Engineering Corporation that handled the renovation work. The renovation activities of the Dalada Maligawa following the bomb attack on it by terrorists on January 25, 1998 come to an end with the completion of the laying of the golden shield over the renovated golden canopy. |
