Apollo Hospital performs remarkably well in six months - Chandra Shukla

By Kushani Ratnayake

Apollo Hospital has done extremely well since its launch in Colombo six months ago. According to the Executive Director of the Apollo hospital Chandra B Shukla the Hospital has got tremendous support from the public.

"We have been doing exceedingly well during the past six months, tremendous support was given not only from the public but also from the government and the public sector," he said.

"The peace process has also helped us tremendously. We find ourselves lucky to be in Sri Lanka with the ongoing peace process," he said.

For the last six months they have performed 215 open-heart surgeries, 136 brain surgeries and 2,000 other operations. They have introduced the latest models in the field of medicine and have high-class and professional surgeons.

"We have a doctor from Bombay to do cosmetic and plastic surgeries and have a Neurology Department with specialised doctors," he said. They have done open-heart surgeries from an 81-year old man to a seven-month old baby. After the open-heart surgeries most of the patients have been able to return home within less than seven days, he said.

The patients have the advantage of getting appointments with the doctor over the phone. This facility has been introduced to reduce queues and to provide all patients the convenience to channel the doctor and to save time of the patient and the doctor.

"The patient should come at the correct time and if there is a delay or if one can't make it they should inform us so that we can arrange another date for them," Shukla said.

They have also arranged a network of ambulances in and out of the city. "When there is an emergency we send the nearest ambulance," he said. The hospital employs multinational doctors especially from India and Sri Lankan doctors who have come after overseas assignments. The hospital has modern and advanced technology.

"We try to keep a very clean environment so that we do not allow visitors to bring flowers because they carry millions of germs," he said. For the last six months, 97,100 patients have gone through the whole process of body scan.

"If a patient has a problem with our systems they are free to discuss with us. We are ready to provide a good service to the community," he said.
