Indian coast guard arrest 79 Bangladeshi fishermen CALCUTTA, Monday (AFP) India's coast guard on Sunday arrested 79 Bangladeshi fishermen aboard eight trawlers after they strayed into Indian waters off the Bay of Bengal. Eastern Indian state of West Bengal's Sunderbans development affairs minister Kanti Ganguly told AFP that the Indian coast guard seized the Bangladeshi vessels after being tipped off. The incident happened Sunday afternoon near Bangadhuni island in the Bay of Bengal close to the Sunderbans forest. On December 17, 271 Bangladeshi fishermen on 13 trawlers and five boats were arrested by the Indian coast guard when they were found fishing near Kenda island off the Sunderbans. "Indian officials are in talks with Bangladesh to send them back to their country. We hope that all Bangladeshi fishermen arrested over the past week will be sent back within a day or two," Ganguly said. India shares a 4,095-kilometer (2,560 mile) border with Bangladesh. |
