Political power should be gained through the ballot, rather than bullet - Minister Lokubandara

Political power is something that should be gained through the ballot rather than the bullet. Political violence is alien to our local culture and should be resisted by all who loved democracy, said, Buddhasasana, Justice, Law Reform and National Integration Minister W. J. M. Lokubandara.

The Minister said this at a ceremony held at the Siddharta Vidylaya, Weligama to commemorate late Minister Major Montague Jayawickreme recently.

Minister Lokubandara said foreign political dogmas could never be applied to our country which had evolved its own political and economic norms based on the Tripitaka. Therefore no one had the right to gain power by killing people and suppressing them under an iron heel.

He recalled the great services rendered by late Minister Montague Jayawickreme to the people in the South in particular and the country at large, saying August 18, 1987 is a sorrowful and unforgettable day in the political history of this country.

It was the day on which a bomb explosion occurred in the Parliament building killing Matara District Minister Keerthi Abeywickreme and injuring several other parliamentarians including late Minister Lalith Athulathmudali. The shock caused by this unfortunate incident caused severe mental strain to late Minister Montague Jayawickreme too. Such gruesome incidents aimed at causing damage to politicians should be denounced by all civilised people.
