Hakeem dismissed, says SLMC dissident group

The Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) dissident group yesterday said the party High Command had unanimously decided to dismiss and expel Minister Rauff Hakeem from the membership of the Party following Disciplinary Committee recommendations.

They had decided this last Friday as Hakeem failed to attend the disciplinary inquiry before the Disciplinary Committee scheduled on December 17 to face 37 charges against him.

Dr. A.L.M. Hafrath in a press release claims that Hakeem failed to submit any explanation in respect of the charges sent to him together with the notice summoning for an inquiry. Hakeem had also not asked to postpone it or sent a representative, he said.

Hakeem contacted by the Daily News, said he is still the party leader and he had expelled Dr. Hafrath and some party rebels.

"Their decision to expel me from the party has no legal validity as they have already been expelled from the party. I have already informed the Election Commissioner about their expulsion," Hakeem added. He said he will take stern action against the dissidents if they continue to use SLMC letterheads to issue their press releases.

"I did not want to take the Party before court but I am compelled to do so if they do not stop it hereafter," the Minister added.
