NEMA delegation meets President, Parliamentarians

The North East Muslim Assembly (NEMA) met President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, key ministers of the ruling party including SLMC ministers and MPs and held discussions on peace and relevant matters and contemporary problems pertaining to Muslims in the North and East.

The NEMA team headed by its chairman, Dr. S. M. A. Jabbar met President Kumaratunga at the President's House and held cordial discussions which lasted nearly two hours.

NEMA consisting of educationalists, prominent lawyers, medical professionals, representatives of the social service movements and trustees of mosques gave an introduction of the assembly and its objectives and functioning towards peace and harmony of the country.

Resolutions passed at Nintavur, Oluvil and Akkaraipattu were also handed over to the President along with the Memorandum on Muslim issues on peace initiatives by NEMA Chairman Dr. Jabbar.

President Chandrika Kumaratunga was highly impressed by the activities of NEMA expressed her view to meet the members of the assembly on a regular basis and thanked the organisers for convening this significant meeting. Adviser of Assembly Dr. A. L. M. Jameel, Deputy Chairman Dr. U. L. M. Nisar, Secretary Dr. U. L. Sarafdeen and the Independent Candidate of the Digamadulla district A. M. M. Naushad also spoke.

The NEMA delegation also met Ministers Prof. G. L. Peries and Milinda Moragoda at Parliamentary Complex and held a lively discussion. Digamadulla District MP M. Mustapha was also present at this meeting where lots of things on peace in the North and East were discussed at length.

Later NEMA met both factions of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress to help them patch their differences. They held discussions with Minister Rauf Hakeem and Minister Athaulla repeatedly on several occasions at the Parliamentary Complex. SLMC Minister Noordeen Mashoor, MPs H. M. M. Harees, M. I. Anver Ismail and M. B. A. Ameen were also the others whom NEMA met at the Parliamentary Complex for discussions emphasising importance of the unity of Sri Lanka Muslim Congress at a time when Government is taking meaningful steps towards achieving permanent peace in Sri Lanka for which all have been trying hard.
