Desalinated sea sand can be used for construction - Researchers

by Rashomi Silva

Sri Lankan researchers say scientifically desalinated sea sands can be used in construction without adverse effects on the buildings.

"Our researchers have found out that the use of sea sand will be profitable over the use of river sand. Further that will eliminate the adverse effects sand mining has on the environment," Minister of Irrigation and Water Management Gamini Jeyewickrama Perera said.

"The government with the assistance of the private sector has designed a project to desalinate sea sand, for the use in developmental activities, and in medium and mega scale constructions. Steps will be taken to implement the project immediately", the Minister said.

The government have taken this decision after carefully considering the hazardous effects river sand mining have caused on the environment, Perera said. researches have revealed that eight million of cubes of sand are used annually for the development activities and large and medium scale constructions.

Fifty per cent of the sand is used in the Western province, a spokesperson for the ministry said.
