Warne injury mars Australia's big win over England

MELBOURNE, Sunday (AFP) - Shane Warne's dislocated shoulder injury, which threatens his World Cup participation, marred another convincing Australian one-day cricket win over England at the Melbourne Cricket Ground Sunday.

The champion legspinner injured his bowling arm when he dove to field a ball off his own bowling and is now in serious doubt of missing the World Cup in South Africa starting in six weeks.

Australia followed up their seven-wicket victory in Sydney last Friday with an 89-run beating here Sunday, dismissing the hapless tourists for 229 in response to their record 318 for six from 50 overs.

A record-breaking second-wicket stand between Adam Gilchrist and skipper Ricky Ponting propelled Australia to their formidable total. Gilchrist was named man of the match after he bludgeoned 124 from 104 balls.

Gilchrist and Ponting (119) blasted a partnership of 225 at better than a run-a-ball to continue Australia's scorching batting summer and leave England win-less on tour after 13 matches.

Ponting and Gilchrist's stand was Australia's highest-ever partnership in a limited overs match, bettering by one run the stand by Allan Border and Dean Jones against Sri Lanka in 1984-85. The stand - off just 206 balls - was also the highest in Australia and the first double-century partnership against England.

Australia picked up a bonus point by restricting England's run rate below 254. They have 11 points after two wins, to England's one.

In-form opener Nick Knight stood out again for England scoring 70 off 68 balls and improving his chances of playing in the remaining two Ashes Tests against Australia in Melbourne and Sydney.

Knight's innings ended when he misjudged a Shane Watson slower delivery on the last ball of the 25th over and lofted a catch to Shane Warne at mid-wicket. It followed Knight's unbeaten 111 in game one of the tri-series in Sydney.

Ian Blackwell, who appeared lucky not to be given out caught behind off Warne, when he was in single figures, hit 43 off 54 balls before he was brilliantly run out by a throw from wicketkeeper Gilchrist.

Blackwell shared in a spirited 72-run stand for the seventh wicket with allrounder Craig White, who remained unbeaten on 57 after running out of batting partners.

Tearaway paceman Brett Lee claimed 2-31 off nine overs and Warne 2-39 before his injury. Australia's fielding was outstanding with three run outs of England batsmen -- Ronnie Irani (0), Alec Stewart (3) and Blackwell.

England take on Sri Lanka in Brisbane Tuesday.
