News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | LSSP with PM on peace talks The General Secretary of the Lanka Sama Samaja Party Batty Weerakoon said though the LSSP does not see that pre-conditions for negotiations are helpful, it stands with the Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe's claim that the pursuit of peace is a 'process', such process can be meaningful only to the extent that the LTTE is progressively and efficiently weaned away from its terrorism. Issuing a statement over the LTTE's reported announcement at the last Oslo sittings that it is willing to discuss a political solution to the ethnic problem in the context of a united Sri Lanka, Weerakoon said that the announcement has not come as a surprise. Weerakoon said separatist ideology could only serve the purposes of an armed struggle. It has to give way at the negotiating table. Dr. Anton Balasingham showed understanding of this reality when he announced at the outset that 'separate state' is not an 'operative' concept in the current negotiations. |
