Book on peace education launched

A book on peace education and conflict transformation compiled by the National Institute of Education (NIE) in collaboration with the German Institute for Economic Cooperation (GTZ) was launched yesterday at Royal College, Colombo by School Education Minister Suranimala Rajapakse.

The book which contains creative writings of students and teachers of National Colleges of Education around the country focuses on national unity and the creation of a conflict-free environment. The book is also designed to work as an inter-cultural learning experience for people, especially children, in different parts of the country.

Addressing the ceremony where students from all ethnic groups and all regions were present, Rajapakse said there was a huge responsibility on educationists to promote peace and assist the peace process.

Deputy Manager of the Basic Education Sector Programme, Dr Gerhard Huck in his address said that the background for the "Peace" book was created at the time of the terrorist attack on the airport, with the aim of deriving untapped sources of students and children to promote peace.

"That was when the conflict had reached its high point and today we should be happy that both parties have reached a consensus at the peace talks," he said.
