PA MP pleads not guilty

People's Alliance Colombo district MP Chandana Kathriarachchi and four other accused pleaded not guilty to the amended indictments served on them by the Attorney General in connection with an unlawful assembly and murder case.

When the accused appeared before the Panadura Provincial High Court Judge Maxwell Paranagama on Thursday, Senior State Counsel Wasantha Bandara representing the Attorney General moved court that the Attorney General wanted to amend the indictments inserting the word Raju and others not known participated with the accused on an unlawful assembly with the common object to commit the murder of K. Don Chandraratne on August 24 1996.

The Judge allowed the application of the State Counsel and the amended indictments were served on the accused G. G. Sunil Perera, D. M. Ruwan Chandana Fernando, M. Mahesh Peiris, K. A. Nihal Suresh and parliamentarian K. Don Chandana Kathriarachchi of Kesbewa.

They were indicted with being members of an unlawful assembly with a common object to commit the murder of K. Don Chandraratne on August 24, 1996 at Galagahandiya, Nampamunuwa, Piliyandala.

They were also indicted with causing hurt to K. Don Karunaratne and possessing a pistol to commit the murder of Chandraratne.

The indictments were read out in court and the accused pleaded not guilty.

The Judge fixed trial for February 5 and March 6, 2003 and warned to appear before court on the trial dates.
