Death of Justice F. N. D. Jayasooriya

The funeral of Justice F.N.D. Jayasooriya, a former President of the Court of Appeal will take place at the General Cemetery, Borella, today at 4 p.m.

Justice Ninian as he was affectionately known by his kith and kin, after a brilliant academic career at St. Joseph's College, Colombo and at the University of Ceylon, Peradeniya, took oaths as an advocate of the Supreme Court. While at the university, he won prizes for general proficiency in Latin prose, English and Western History.

He was also a lecturer at the Law Faculty, University of Ceylon (1963 - 1967), visiting lecturer (1969-1972) and senior lecturer and Dean of the Law Faculty, Acquinas University.

He also represented his universities at cricket and continued to do so at Law College and Nomads Cricket Club excelling as an opening batsman and a medium pace bowler.

In 1974, he was appointed Legal Advisor to the Foreign Ministry on secondment from the Judicial Service.

In his career as a judicial officer, Justice Jayasooriya presided over several landmark cases.

For a brief period, he also served as an Assistant Assessor of the Inland Revenue Department before being appointed as Magistrate by the Judicial Services Commission first in Colombo and thereafter at Avissawella, Hambantota and Kandy.

He functioned as a District Judge Mannar, Kurunegala, Ampara, Tangalle, Matara and Galle before his appointment as High Court Judge in 1985. He was appointed Judge of the Court of Appeal in 1995.

A workaholic, he was handicapped by poor health which he neglected to give priority to his work.

Even after his retirement, he took an active role and involved himself in legal academic work.
