by Florence Wickramage 'Shilpa 2002'- a National festival of Handicrafts and Tourism gets under way at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall from December 27 to 30. The crafts exhibition together with a cultural festival has been organised by the National Crafts Council in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Tourism Board. The exhibition will feature creations from Sri Lanka's most talented ` master craftsmen' and consist of 25 varieties of handicrafts which include brass-work, silver items, wood carvings, batik, lace, leather, rush and fibre creations, costume jewellery, lacquerware etc. Exhibits have been selected from handicraft exhibitions held at provincial levels. `Shilpa 2002' will also be a forum for a grand festival of music, dance and drama which will personify Sri Lanka's cultural heritage. Three best handicraftsmen of national level from among the participants will be chosen for the 'Wiskam Ransilu' Awards and financial awards. In addition, three veteran artistes who have rendered yeoman services for the protection and improvement of national handicrafts will also be honoured at an awards ceremony to be held at a later date. Organisers say trade stalls are available at a nominal rate. Information could be obtained from the Gramodaya Folk Art Centre at Battaramulla.
