by Asanga Warnakulasuriya Hindu Heritage II, a book by Nirmala Ramachandra on Hinduism was launched on Tuesday. The first copy of the book was presented to Indian High Commissioner, Nirupen Sen by Nirmala Ramachandra at a charm ceremony held at the Taj Samudra Hotel. Continuing the journey of Hindu Heritage II, the book endeavours to include many features of the ancient Hindu culture. Hindu Heritage II begins with the development of temple design, from cave dwellings of pre historic era to stupendous artistic structures of the Middle Age. Later it proceeds to festivals closely linked with temples, some of which are unique and unusual. Myths and legends of Hindu culture was included without depreciating the sacred rituals. Nirmala Ramachandra graduated with honours in Mathematics and Physics from the University of London in 1957 and thereafter joined the Department of Inland Revenue. In 1990 she became the first woman Commissioner and subsequently in 1994 was appointed Commissioner General of Inland Revenue.She was the first woman head of the Department in its 62 year history. A spokesman from Stamford Lake said 200 copies of Hindu Heritage II sent to England and India was sold out. Nirmala Ramachandra told the Daily News that 60 per cent of the proceeds will be donated to Ramakrishna Mission. |
