by Panadura group correspondent Chairman of the Panadura Urban Council Deepthi Asoka Abeywickrama said that a good management service would be introduced to the Urban Council from January 1, 2003 to administer it and provide necessary facilities to the ratepayers without an interruption. He was addressing the monthly meeting of the Panadura UC. He said the Council is facing a financial crisis due to the unsatisfactory administration by the People's Alliance. However in the last six months the council was able to bring its administration to a certain standard. He said according to a decision taken by the councillors the pavement hawkers were removed from the streets in the Town area, but again they were given a chance of selling fruits. They had now violated the UC ordinance and constructed permanent structures over the drains obstructing the pavements. The Council has to take a decision. Jayantha Kandena, UNP, tabled a resolution condemning the brutal murders of the Sri Jayewardenaprua University student Samantha and the Chairman Walallavita Pradeshiya Sabha and his driver. S. Samarakkody (JVP) lashed out at Jayantha Kandena's comments at the meeting. UNP Councillors retaliated condemning action of the JVP in its earlier insurrections. Ranjith Fernando (UNP) said the people had not forgotten the destruction caused to the country by the JVP in 1971 and 1989. Chairman Deepthi Asoka Abeywickrama said the JVP leader Rohana Wijeweera spent a luxurious life on a tea estate in Ulapane when his followers destroyed public and private property and killing innocent people. However President Premadasa had to act according to the emergency law to save the country. The JVP leaders even today do no like to see the entire country living amicably. Vice Chairman Vijith Priyantha de Silva, also condemned the present JVP leadership. |
