All's well, as Mayor lists progressive work program

by P. Rajaratnam in Nuwara Eliya

At the monthly meeting of the Nuwara Eliya Municipal Council held in the MC Chambers, presided over by UNP Mayor Chandana Karunaratne, there was a verbal duel between the Mayor and the former UNP mayor Bandula Seneviratne, over the question of the latters Japanese visit and also the manner in which the long awaited Councils' new shops were allocated. The Mayor described the manner in which these shops were allocated as an utter farce. The Mayor went on to say that soon the truth will out, and the facts revealed.

The former Mayor Bandula Seneviratne, took strong exception and refuted the charges and added that nothing of that sort happened during his tenure of office.

Mayor Chandana Karunaratne, went on to say that during his nine months office, attempts have been made by certain sections of the council including some members to pull him down and such abortive attempts had failed miserably, and he would continue as Mayor undeterred to the best of his abilities.

The SLFP, member H. M. Abeysinghe said as a member of the opposition, his group had always extended its co-operation for all the good work initiated by the new council and there was no question of any one trying to pull down the Mayor or anyone else for that matter, he added.

He said the Mayor and the former Mayor may have differences of opinion or divergent views on issues, for which the members were not responsible.

However, the arguments and counter arguments among the members ended on a happy note, when the Mayor enumerated various progressive programs of work which he intends implementing with the co-operation and goodwill of the entire council.

A letter written by the only member of the fair sex former UNP Mayor Nalin Thilaka Herath, a Senior Attorney at Law and the independent member of the council, alleged that the Council meetings have been purposely fixed on Fridays, knowing well the member will not attend council meetings on Fridays, since she had to attend the Circuit Court at Walapone.

She had reminded the council that she had been elected with a thumping majority, and had made several requests that the monthly meetings should be fixed on any day other than Fridays. She had alleged that the arbitrary action on the part of the council was to deny her justifiable reasons, and thus deprive her rights. She has stated that she will take up the issue with the Chief Minister of the Central Province and also other higher authorities.
