Sharp increase in BTL's commitment in Colombo transshipment

BTL's commitment in the Colombo transshipment has increased tremendously, said the visiting Managing Director of BTL Joachim von der Heydt, from Germany addressing a media briefing in Colombo recently. "BTL has grown in the Colombo Port with its own officers representing in Colombo," he said and thanked the clients for their loyal support during difficult times.

The Bengal Tiger Lines' objective is to provide reliable shuttle feeder connections to the Bay of Bengal and South India.

The shuttle concept was pioneered by BTL in the late 1980s and the successful implementation of this concept has been reflected in support levels rendered by Main Lines operating the Bay of Bengal.

In spite of difficulties and trading conditions, volumes carried in 2000 were in the region of 300,000 teus. BTL's strict SOC policy of neutrality has been recognised by the trade, making BTL the leading feeder operator in the Bay of Bengal.

The company has also been the first shipping company to operate two Container Berth Reservations Schemes in Chennai, comprising a dedicated berth and CY stack management, in co-operation with Madras Port trust on the Singapore/Chennai sector. These schemes operated in 1996/97 and 1999/2000 guaranteed berthing on arrival and permitted BTL to establish the only fixed day services with twice weekly sailings to and from India.

BTL's feeder services are based on long-term chartered vessels and group owned by tonnage which guarantees a high degree of reliability.

Since the inception of BTL, fleet size has consistently matched the substantial growth of Indian traffic, and today BTL operates vessel sizes which were until recently employed as Main Line ships on the Far East/Europe sector.

In line with the philosophy of providing a reliable feeder operation and strict neutrality, BTL has its own agency offices in India and Sri Lanka.

Not only do these allow a cost effective operation, but also permit hand-on operations to daily control, with an ability to react on the spot to market requirements. Bill Smart, Owners Representative Singapore, said that the company had reinforced the decision to expand the capacity in Colombo with its efficient port services, both at SLPA and the SAGT.

BTL has been proud to plan a significant role in providing the high standards of shuttle feeder, connections in the Bay of Bengal. Today's position reflect BTL's perseverance and commitment to continue its success in accompanying the challenging developments throughout the Indian sub continent, he said.

Owners Representative, Sri Lanka, Randan Ratnasingham said that BTL's main objective is to be the leading feeder operator and making a difference between our competitors, which the clients are experiencing.
