No incidents in Nelliyadi

No incidents were reported from Nelliyadi yesterday after tension ran high on Tuesday, Police said.

Protesters had damaged a police bus and injured three police constables in Nelliyadi, five km southwest of Point Pedro, yesterday around 11.30 a.m. The protesters who had suddenly turned violent threw petrol bombs and stones at the EPDP office. Civilians and Jaffna university students participated in the protest. Most university students and civilians had been transported to the venue in four buses, military sources said.

A hand grenade thrown had not exploded. Police were compelled to use tear gas and fire rubber bullets to disperse the crowd. The situation was brought under control by police around 2.45 pm.

Meanwhile, shops were closed in the general area of Kappachchigama, about 25 km southwest of Vavuniya on December 9 following a protest demonstration against the EPDP in the Wanni.
