President condoles on Moonesinghe's death

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, expressing her sorrow on the death of former Deputy Speaker Anil Moonesinghe states that his demise is a great loss not only to the Sri Lanka Freedom Party but also to the progressive people of the country.

Recalling the leftist leader's political career even before he joined the SLFP in 1980, the President states that he was an active member of the British Revolutionary Party and the British Labour Party.

Moonesinghe functioned as the Assistant Secretary of the Lanka Sama Samaja Party in the 1950s and entered Parliament in 1956 to represent the Agalawatte seat.

In her condolence message, the President states that the Ceylon Transport Board recorded the best of its revival phase when Moonesinghe held the reins of administration.

He was an efficient administrator who won the confidence of the working class and was a trade union leader. As a devout Buddhist, he rendered an excellent service to the Buddhasasana as the President of the Mahabodhi Society and as member of the Anagarika Dharmapala Foundation. During the PA regime in 1994, he was the Deputy Speaker of the House, the President said.
