Galaboda waterfalls environs an eyesore

by Nawalapitiya group correspondent

The environs of the Galaboda waterfalls one of the most picturesque waterfalls in the island, very popular among foreign and local tourists has turned to be an eyesore.

During the past few months four deaths have occurred near this fall. As it is situated in the midst of a thicket about 1-2 km off Galaboda railway station young school going couples travelling from Kandy by the Badulla bound Podimenike express train which reaches Galaboda around 10.30 a.m. could be seen among bushes in varied state of attire. Parents going with their young children to watch the fall are often put to severe embarrassment because of these indecent sights.

Secondly young boys who consume liquor often turn to be riotous. Once they smashed glass windows of the railway station. Recently some of these young tourists have assaulted an estate youth without reason. Later they were taken into custody by the Nawalapitiya Police and produced before the Nawalapitiya Magistrate who remanded them for 14 days.

There also seem to be organized gangs that threaten young couples and plunder their valuables such as gold chains, wristwatches, purses etc.

On the other hand the environmental pollution caused by visitors is too severe. Recently this matter was discussed at Pasbage Korale Pradeshiya Sabha monthly meeting .
