O/L impersonators to get three year ban

by Manjula Fernando

The four GCE Advanced Level students who were caught impersonating at a Kandy examination centre in a bid to help their Ordinary Level friends will face criminal charges. They are to be banned from sitting another national examination for three years by the Examinations Department.

The candidature of the four OL students will also be suspended for three years if confirmed guilty. Their results will be cancelled after the Departmental inquiry, Examinations Commissioner Mahinda Wijesiri told the Daily News yesterday.

The Commissioner said that he was yet to receive a report from the Examinations Centre Supervisor and the Coordinating Officer following which action will be taken to initiate an inquiry.

"An impersonation case is regarded as a criminal offence, hence the Police Department has to be informed to proceed under the criminal law of the country," Wijesiri said. "But there will be a separate inquiry by the Department where the fate in respect of their future candidature and the results of this exam will be determined," he said.

The four AL students from leading schools in Kandy, Kadugannawa and Peradeniya have excelled at their Ordinary Level exams earlier. They had forged the postal identity cards to sit for the exam on behalf of their friends.

The students were produced before the Kandy Magistrate on Tuesday and released on bail.
