By Shirajiv Sirimane

The 14th annual SLIM awards 2003 the most glamorous marketing communication event of the year will be held on March 1, 2003 at the SLECC.

The event is being conducted by the Sri Lanka Institute of Marketing in association with the FOUR A's. (Accredited Advertising Agencies Association)

For the first time since its inception, the organising Committee has decided to focus special emphasis on new advertising agencies. According to Chairperson Awards Sub Committee, Tusitha Kumarakulasingham, a special discounted entry fee will be charged from them to encourage these new agencies.

The SLIM awards 2003 have also brought out an appropriate theme for the event. The theme for the year 2003 will be 'Arm yourself. Peace is declared.' The Chairperson said that 'Peace means war in advertising agencies since Peace brings more business opportunities to them.'

She said a sum of Rs. 3 million (excluding advertising) would be spent to host this event.

This year the Committee has also decided to introduce an 'Agency of the year' award on the basis of the total quality of awards won by each the agency. Entries will be accepted in two main classifications, the main Marcom Category and the integrated Marcom category. A total of 141 awards including the main awards in the Press, Television and Radio along with the AD of the year and Campaign of the year award will be recognised at the SLIM awards 2003.

Entries will be accepted until January 20 2003.

The two main categories will be judged separately by two independent panels with a common chairman. "This is for greater efficiency," she said. The judges will include two foreigners and leading marketing and advertising professionals. Another area that will be highlighted further this year is the partnership of the agency and the client. The client will be expected to endorse some key information areas relevant to the entry, such as who is the communication directed at and the response expected from the consumer or customer.

"The preparations for the SLIM awards 2003 commenced way back in June 2002.

A team of very dedicated, and capable marketing professionals have been working on the project extensively, and are committed to conduct an award ceremony on March 01, 2003 that will surpass all the standards that has been achieved so far." "The strength behind the SLIM AWARDS 2003 is the many partners without whose support and the backing it would not be possible to organise this event," she said.

The strategic partners for this event for the past 8 years have been Dulux. The main partners are Hiru FM, Maliban, and Suntel. The media partners for the SLIM awards are Rupavahini, ANCL, Sun FM and Sha Fm.
