We must work for peace - Attanayake

by S.M. Jiffrey Abdeen - Kandy South Group Correspondent

Those elected to governing bodies are expected to do service to the people and the nation. They must not abuse their powers or do things by their actions which will affect the people said the Minister of Central Region Development Tissa Attanayake.

He made these observations when he addressed the meeting of Chairmen of the Urban Councils convened by the Chairman of the Nawalapitiya Urban Council Mrs. Nirupa Karunaratne held at the Nawalapitiya Town Hall.

Minister Attanayake said that we must support this peace process and give strength and encouragement to those involved in it. As representatives of the people it is our duty to ensure there is peace in the country. It is heartening to note that the Chairmen of the Chavakachcheri and Point Pedro Regions have attended this meeting which is a very good sign for the peace process.

He also said it is unfortunate that owing to this war and the propaganda carried out abroad, foreign investors and foreign donors either restricted their aid or even stopped giving aid or investing in this country. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe fought against all these odds and convinced the world that peace could be brought about. All the effects of the adverse propaganda carried out was neutralised when the LTTE also participated in the peace support meeting held in Oslo recently. The aid obtained will be used to develop and rehabilitate the country which in turn would resuscitate the economy.

The Minister said that the opposition wields power in all the Provincial Councils except one Provincial Council. These Provincial Councils are placing various obstacles when an attempt is made to do service to the people and this naturally has resulted in setbacks. In order to overcome these obstacles, the government is compelled to bring these development works under the Provincial development Ministry and this will come into effect from 2003.

The Chairman of the Nawalapitiya Urban Council Nirupa Karunaratne, President of the Urban Council Chairman's Association - Chairman Chilaw UC Sunil Perera Secretary, Minuwangoda UC Chairman Newton Kulasuirya and Gampola UC Chairman Sarath Hettiarachchi was also present.
