by Trincomalee correspondent A programme to educate the Sinhala public servants in Tamil and Tamil public servants in Sinhala was inaugurated recently in Trincomalee. Addressing the public servants from Trincomalee Town and Gravets, Tampalakamam and Kantale who were to participate in the educational programme, Consultant, National Integration Programme Unit (NIPU) M.M.B. Warsakoon said it has become necessary for public servants to learn the different languages used by people in the areas where they serve. Knowing each others language will also help to propagate harmony. The NIPU functions under the Ministry of Justice, Law Reforms and National Integration. Government Agent, Trincomalee N.P.K. Nelumdeniya who chaired the occasion said it is up to the public servants to learn the languages for which government has provided facilities. It has become necessary for Sinhala public servants to learn the Tamil language and Tamil speaking public servants to learn Sinhalese language in order to facilitate provision of service to both linguistic groups. Full day classes will be held every other week for six weeks at the Sri Sangamitta Buddhist Pilgrims Rest in Trincomalee. With Swedish assistance this programme aims to promote linguistic harmony relations and other relations. The programme inaugurated was a pilot project of a five year plan 2003-2007. Similar pilot projects have been inaugurated in Badulla, Matale, Kandy and Kegalle too. |
